2026 cost guide
50-gallon water heater replacement cost
A 50-gallon tank is common, but “50 gallon” is not enough information to price the job. Fuel type, venting, model, warranty, access, and installation changes can move the quote more than capacity itself.
Fixr's 2026 national guide lists about $700 to $2,500 for a 50-gallon water heater installation. That is a broad planning range, not a like-for-like quote. Gas, electric, power-vent, and heat-pump 50-gallon systems can have very different installation requirements.
Four 50-gallon quotes can still be four different jobs
What to ask when someone says “50-gallon water heater”
- Gas, electric, heat pump, or another fuel/type?
- Atmospheric vent, power vent, direct vent, or no combustion vent?
- Exact model number
- Tank, parts, and labor warranty
- Any changes to venting, gas, electrical, drainage, pan, or expansion control
- Removal and disposal
- Any other repair work priced separately
Do you actually need 50 gallons?
If the current capacity has worked well, like-for-like is a useful starting point. If the household regularly runs out of hot water, capacity, recovery rate, first-hour rating, or a change in technology may be worth reopening. Do not automatically move to a larger tank just because the old one failed.
Compare tank versus tankless without reopening every decision.
Retail price is not installed price
It is reasonable to look up a 50-gallon tank online, but the shelf price does not tell you what the plumber is supplying or what the finished installation includes. Ask for the exact model and warranty before deciding that a markup is unexplained.
