Water heater replacement quote checklist
A useful quote should tell you enough to understand what equipment you are buying, what work is included, what can change the price, and who stands behind the job.
The FTC recommends getting multiple estimates and says a written estimate should describe the work, materials, completion date, and price. For a water heater, add the exact equipment, warranty, removal, permit handling, and any extra plumbing, venting, gas, or electrical work.
1. Equipment
- Water heater type and fuel
- Capacity or sizing basis
- Manufacturer and exact model number when available
- Efficiency rating if it matters to the decision
- Manufacturer warranty
2. Base replacement
- Removal of the old water heater
- Installation of the new unit in the stated location
- Normal water, gas, electrical, vent, or drain connections that are part of the base job
- Haul-away and disposal
- Startup and basic testing

3. Work that should not disappear inside one total
If the job includes a leaking shutoff valve, pipe repair, venting change, electrical change, access work, drain work, or another known repair, ask whether it can be shown separately. That makes the base replacement easier to compare across plumbers.
4. Permit, code, and inspection handling
Requirements vary by location and job. The quote should make clear whether permit or inspection handling is included when required, and whether known code-related changes are already in the number or can still change it.
5. Warranty and service
- Equipment warranty
- Installer labor warranty
- Who handles a warranty issue
- What happens if the final job scope changes after inspection
6. Timing and total
Confirm the expected installation window, the total price as currently scoped, payment expectations, and what would cause the price to change. Urgent or after-hours service may reasonably price differently from a scheduled replacement.
If two quotes do not describe the same job, the totals are not ready to compare.
