Water heater leaking: repair or replace?
A leak does not automatically mean the whole water heater is finished. The source matters. A connection or valve can be a repair problem; a leaking tank can point toward replacement.
If you smell or hear leaking gas, leave the home and contact the gas utility or emergency services from outside. If water is reaching electrical equipment or you are not sure what is safe to touch, do not handle the unit. Get professional help.

Do not diagnose more than you actually know
You do not need to identify the failed component before asking for help. Useful information is simpler: where you see water, whether the leak is active, roughly how old the heater is, the type and capacity, and whether there are other known plumbing problems nearby.

Repair or replace?
If the issue is a replaceable valve, fitting, thermostat, heating element, or another limited component, a repair may make sense. If the tank itself is leaking, the unit is already old, or the repair does not resolve the larger reliability problem, replacement becomes easier to justify.

If replacement is likely, define the base job before the emergency expands it
Urgency makes comparison harder. Start with the current water-heater type, capacity, access, known extra work, and timing. That gives each plumber the same starting point and makes it easier to see what is actually changing the price.
